Ek Balam is a Mayan archaeological site in Yucatán, Mexico. It is located 30 km north of the city of Valladolid, 2 km from the Mayan village of Ek Balam. In Yucatec Maya, Ék' Báalam means "Black Jaguar" (Ek, black; Balam, jaguar). From around 300 BC until the arrival of the Spanish. The human settlement at Ek Balam covered about 12 km2, including a sacred central space of 1 km2, where the elite resided. This small central area was protected by three walls. It was a very rich Mayan capital called Talol, which had been founded by Ék'Báalam (dark jaguar) or Coch CalBalam. It dominated a very populated region. In the early years of the 11th century, a foreign incursion possibly by the Itzaes subdued the power centers of Ek Balam and Yaxunah. Most of the buildings date from the late classical period. The entrance to this site, protected by two walls, begins with a magnificent Mayan arch, then the buildings of the ceremonial center, the oval palace, and a fairly large Mayan ball court. Overnight stay in the cabins.
DAY 04.
VISIT TO VALLADOLID WITH CHICHEN ITZA AND ARRIVAL AT TEKAX YUCATAN WITH OVERNIGHT STAY.
CITY TOUR IN VALLADOLID
In the state of Yucatán, lies Valladolid, a Magical Town since 2012, and currently considered among the possible World Heritage sites. The Heroic city of Valladolid was founded in 1543 by Francisco de Montejo and is currently the second most important city after Mérida in Yucatán. But in terms of tourism, it is one of the most important geographical points due to its proximity to archaeological sites such as Chichén Itzá and Ek Balam, as well as having its own tourist attractions.
CONTINUATION TO CHICHÉN ITZÁ
Dated to approximately 1553 years ago, these famous Mayan pyramids are located about an hour and a half away. Chichen Itza's name derives from the Mayan words "chi" (mouth), "chen" (well), and "Itza" (the name of the people of this region). The site is divided into three areas: the north group (purely Toltec), the central group (from the early period), and the one known as the old Chichen. Only the first two groups are visited. At Chichén, there will be a lunch buffet.
CONTINUATION TO TEKAX YUCATÁN
Tekax is located south of the state of Yucatán, approximately 1:15.
DAY 05
ADVENTURE IN THE CHOCANTE DE CRISTAL Y CUARZO CAVE.
Live the unique experience of your life by venturing into the XIBALBÁ of the cave, be prepared for this journey full of emotions to the center of the earth. The path is not easy, large stones, narrow paths, and deceptive terrain make this adventure not suitable for those with heart problems or claustrophobia. The first meters are "easy" to walk, but later you have to pass a 200-meter path on your hands and knees until you reach one of the vaults where you will see water marks on the walls of what was once under the sea, you will also be able to admire fossilized stones.
The path continues through a passage of another 50 meters more chest deep, but the reward at the end of that effort is to see "waterfalls" of minerals that shine with just being touched by the light of the lamps. Large formations of stalactites and stalagmites make the view a spectacle in its entirety.
Upon leaving, we will go to the Mayan community to have our meals and free time to rest, in the evening dinner will be at the local market.
DAY 06
DEPARTURE TO LOLTUN CAVES WITH VISIT AND MEAL IN UXMAL WITH SITE VISIT.
Loltún, which in Mayan means "Stone Flower," (this name depends on the fact that throughout the cave there are motifs depicting flowers) is the name of unique caves located in the southern State that attract the attention of locals and foreigners and where evidence of human settlements dating back 400 to 700 years has been found. The Maya used them to obtain clay, with which they made their utensils, and also
as a religious center and refuge.
Another attractive feature of great interest is the rock paintings: on one wall, negative hands can be seen, and on another, more elaborate paintings are located representing faces, animals, and stepped frets.
CONTINUATION TO UXMAL
Located 80 km from Mérida, it demonstrates what Puuc art built in the parallelepiped forms of its buildings, with smooth walls and decorated friezes, most of the buildings in Uxmal belong to the Mayan classic period and some to the late middle phase, Chaac is represented in multiple buildings, in the governor's palace, quadrangle of the nuns, the temple of the diviner, among others.
